An artificial lake made near Thol village which covers 7square km in the state of Gujarat. It was previously constructed for irrigation tank in 1912. It is made of fresh water and the lake is covered with marshes. In 1988 it was declared as Thol Lake Bird Sanctuary. It has about 150 species of birds and 60% of water birds and many migratory birds come to nest and breed in this lake. The most prominent birds that have been seen are flamingos and sarus crane.
History of Thol Lake Bird Sanctuary
The Thol Lake was initially built for irrigation purpose by the Gaekwad regime in 1912 for the betterment of farmers. The government deals with the Forest as well with the irrigation centre.

Where is it located?
The sanctuary is near the city of Ahmedabad. It is approximately 21 kilometers. Busses and private cars are available for hire from both Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad. Travelling by train, one can get down at the Ahemdabad railway station which is approximately 30 kilometers. Again the nearest airport is in Ahmedabad covering a distance of 40 km to reach Thol Lake.
Ideal Visiting Time
Although it is open throughout the year, but the best time is preferred from October to March. The visitors are advised to contact the higher authorities for more detailed information.
