The temple as suggested by the name holds the central deity of Hindu God Surya or Sun God. The temple is located on the banks of the river Pushpavati that runs through Mehsana.
The whole Surya Mandir area is full of historic and religious value. The major attractions are the Surya Kund, the Sabha Mandap and the Guda Mandap. The Surya Kund is a large water reservoir leading from steps that was used in the past for devotees to clean themselves before worshipping. The Sabha Mandap is a separate construction that was used as a religious meeting hall. It consists of 52 carved pillars that indicate the 52 weeks in a year. The pillars have carvings that portray scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata.
The central part of the temple is the Guda Mandap that houses the idol of Surya Devta with inverted lotuses as the main theme as lotus is known to be the flower of the sun.
The temple was built in the Solanki era by King Somnath in the 1026. The Solankis were regarded as the descendants of the Surya Devta hence the temple establishment. The Surya Mandir of Modhera makes it an interesting tourist spot in India for its famed history.
The Surya Mandir holds great Hindu mythological value for its rich influential history. It is also a fine example of earliest forms of geometry that were used to cast it. Enormous wall carvings are present with erotic sculptures that were used in the ancient past to train the Jain hopefuls. The temple architecture comprises of three forms of architecture in the likes of Surya Kund, Guda Mandap and Sabha Mandap making it a famous travel scene in Gujarat.

The Surya Mandir is a prime temple complex situated at the Modhera in the Mehsana district of Gujarat. One can reach the Surya Temple by road and rail. The Mehsana District can be reached by buses or private cars can be hired from any of the cities of Gujarat. Railway services are also available from the major cities upto Mehsana.
Ideal Visiting Time
The Surya Mandir can be visited anytime of the year but the best time is between December to January during the period of Uttarayan and the Modhera Dance festival. It takes place on the third week of January with reputed cultural artistes being the main attraction of it.
