Siyot Caves

The monastic Siyot caves are located centrally in the Siyot Village of Lakpat Taluka region of Kutch district, Gujarat. The caves are also known as Kateshwar caves that are major Buddhist footprints in Gujarat. The caves are famous for the early Chinese monks who would travel around the world for spiritual purposes. The Siyot caves comprises of a unique artistic sphere making a must visit tourist destination in Gujarat. The caves are carved from five rocks consisting of a chamber and ambulant.

The caves also showed symbolic creations of a Shiv temple which dates back to the 1st-2nd centuries. Excavations earlier showed traces of Buddha seals and other priceless artifacts. Brahmi scripts and Devanagari carving are also spotted in the caves that further cement its place in historic heritage. The Siyot caves are also famed for the various Buddhist seals and Gadhaiya coins that were reveled from its mounds. The caves also were home to bandits’ centuries ago as they would use to hide their belongings here.

History

The caves were built as first as in the 1st AD and are integral part of the 80 Buddhist caves at the start of the Indus River as claimed by ancient Chinese dwellers. The caves hold a strong Buddhist channel from the ancient past attracting a lot of visitors. The caves are famous for its inscriptions and rare design. The carvings on the cave bodies are also rich in Buddhist architecture.

Where is it located?

The caves can be reached by road and rail. Private buses ply from the nearest point of Bhuj. Railway connections are also available with Bhuj being the nearest railway stations that are connected to other major cities of Gujarat. Flights can also be availed from the domestic Bhuj airport connecting Mumbai.
