Shamlaji Temple

The ancient Shamlaji Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu .One can also see stone carving depicting elephants on the side of the temple heads. The Shamlaji Temple is full of elephant structures and carvings making it an emblem. The temple is surrounded by domes and many forms of carvings horse-ridden men with bows and other animals.

The main temple is built from white sandstone and has a brick boundary with a chief gateway. The main shrine is of two stories supported by pillars and a shade with side arches. The carvings on the temple depict the warrior like history that the architecture was based on. The entrance of the temple is foreseen with a giant elephant made from cement. The temple is ideally built widespread over an area that receives a huge crowd from all corners. The Shamlaji Vishnu Temple is a fine combination of historic and religious features.

History

The Hindu Shamlaji Temple dates back to 11th century as ancient ruins suggest. It was built during the Solanki Dynasty and was reconstructed close to 500 years ago. It is surrounded by wooded hills carving a natural boundary. A white silk flag can be spotted flying high atop the temple head.
The century old temple is on the banks of the river Meshvo in Aravalli. The white sandstone structure is a huge pilgrim attraction which has been established from ruins. The temple was once claimed by the Jains after which it was given to the Idar State that consisted of the Modhari Rao Saheb, Revdur, Sunsar, Devdar, etc. The temple is big in structure with many forms of wall etchings and vintage carvings that date back to the Mahabharata and Ramayana.

Where is it located?

The Shamlaji Temple is located close to the National Highway 8 in the district of Aravalli in Shamlaji in the western state of Gujarat in India. State buses are available in plenty from the nearby cities of Ahmedabad and Himatnagar. Bhiloda and Modasa is just 20 kilometers and 29 kilometers away from it.

Ideal Visiting Time

The Shamlaji Temple can be visited all around the year as it is a major site of pilgrimage for the Hindus. The best time to experience the grand reception of the shrine is during the annual celebrations during Kartik Purnima held every year.
