Rajkumar College is another well known place to visit in Gujarat. It is one the oldest educational institutes of the country with rich historical legacy. Previously its door is mainly opened for the relatives and members belonging to the royal families of Gujarat. Now the school is opened for every Indian citizen who can secure admission on the basis of their merit and prescribed norms of this landmark institute. The names of renowned alumni of the school include Bhagavatsinhji (Maharaja of Gondal), Wankaner Maharaja Amarsinhji, Asok Kamte, renowned poet Kavi Kalapi and so on.
The institute is another popular place of tourist attractions in Rajkot. The school comprises of classrooms, living spaces, boarding houses, colonial buildings and offices occupying surface area of about twenty five acres. Every nook and corner of this school still bears the legacy of Kathiawadi regime. The most prominent among them is the Bhavsinhji venue Hall which is now used for various school functions, assemblies, ceremonies and historic functions. Here visitors will find weaponry and large sized portraits of erstwhile Rajkot rulers and has been recently renovated for creating majestic aura of splendor. Adjacently, there is the Sanghrahara that contains rich memorabilia collections of about 130 years old which commemorates on the history of the institute along with the founders.
The foundation stone for this school was laid through the issuance of royal decree by the British government in the year of 1868. Ultimately the journey of this school began in the year of 1870 with the formal inauguration by Bombay Governor Seymour Fitzgerald. The architectural design of the school was done by Col Keatinge. In the year of 1938 it became one of the members of the IPSC (Indian Public Schools Conference). In the year of 2001 Rajkumar College finally opened its door of education for girls also which was previously dominated by boys only. The school has arranged for boarding facilities for boys and girls separately and students studying here need to observe strict disciplines. Apart from imparting education in various levels of schooling, it is also focused on making the students strong, active and participating. Recently, the institute has also launched separate secondary school for girls in the year of 2011.
