Polo Shiva Temple

The Polo Shiva Temple is located in one of the most hidden corners in Gujarat. The temple is amidst t forest in the dense Polo forest. It is worshipped for the main Lord Shiva idol here. The temple is although broken in parts but it is still considered as a major Shiva temple for its unique location. It has wall carvings with full details of ancient artistic creations as it is a very holy place. Polo is situated on the Rajasthan border and was once used as a hiding and secret place by kings and dark creatures from the past.The Polo Shiva Temple is ideally situated in the secretive hills of abundant and decayed location. The Shiva Temple here is still very active and visited by many devotees.

History

The city of Polo was built at the banks of the river Harnav that finds mentionable quotes in the Vedic Puranas. It gets its lustrous green color during monsoon. The Parihar kings of Idar layered the foundation steps to the forest in the 10th century. The later rulers of the Rathor Rajpurs conquered the area during the 15th century naming it Polo derived from Pol meaning doorway. The Shiva temple is a very adventurous locale as it is deep inside the Polo forest that boasts of many species of reptiles and wild animals. The local tribal people are also hailed as major pioneers in building the Polo city between the region of Kalalyiyo and Mamrechi circling Rajasthan and Gujarat.

Where is it located?

The nearest town to the Polo Shiva Temple is Vijaynagar. It lies on the National Highway 8 and is 120 kilometers from Udaipur and 160 kilometers away from Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Buses are available but it is best to hire private cars as public transport is not very stable.

Ideal Visiting Time

The Polo Shiva Temple and the adjoining forest area of Polo can be visited best during monsoon as the whole greenery blooms with the natural water. One can witness the holiness of the temple along with the adventures of the mysterious forest that is full of wild animals. The rise in tourists in the recent years is a pleasant example of the popularity of the place that was once sparsely visited. The reason of winter is also a good time to spot many migratory birds around the temple area.
