Munsar Lake is a landmark lake that had been constructed for the convenience of pilgrims to take bath and also for the objective of irrigation and water conservation during dry seasons. In the surrounding regions of lake, visitors will come across miniature shrines that reflect the architectural patterns of the Chalukya era. This lake is one of the frequently visited places in the state due to its calm and sacred environment. This lake represents the water management skill of the administration during that time without any sort of third party dependence.
The existence of this lake is incomplete without the surrounding temples which used to draw pilgrims from all over the world. Out of 520 shrines only 360 are left today. The most prominent among them is Sas Bahu temple. At present this lake is undergoing transformation along with the holy shrines to regain the lost grandeur and prestige.
The construction of this notable lake dates back to the period of twelfth century under the supervision of Minal Devi who was known to be the mother of Siddharaj Jaisinh, the powerful king of Gujarat. Minal Devi constructed this lake in the shape of the face of holy cow. The lake represents the sincerity of the royal mother and her concern for the drought ridden people of the region. It is no secret that Minal Devi had been successful to acquire the tag of benevolent and just ruler for this place during the medieval time. She also took the initiative of constructing temples that used to be the main center of offering worship by the deities. According to an old inscription, the temples of Sarameshwara and Virameshwara were constructed by Bhuvandeva II.
Where it is located?
This historic lake is based in the town of Viramgam which forms to be the integral portion of the Ahmedabad municipality. It will roughly take 64 km to reach Viramgam from Ahmedabad Railway Station. Saurashtra Express can offer the fastest option to reach Viramgam to Ahmedabad and vice versa.
Ideal Visiting Time
There is no such specific period to visit this wonderful lake but for enjoying the calm and serene atmosphere it is better to visit this spot during the month of November to April when the weather is cool.
