Mul Dwarka

The historic city of Mul Dwarka is situated in the city of Kodinar in the Gir Somnath district. The regiongives a very rustic and pleasant environment for its visitors as its location is very refreshing. The temple lies ideally between hills and sea that uplifts its beautiful creation. The Shri Krishna temple here is a religious spot as it holds its name in the pages of the mythological history. It has mentionable parts in Mahabharata as one of the three main parts of historic Dwarka. The small Sri Krishna Temple is made of limestone and is full of religious values. The temple is situated on the sea shore which further makes it very picturesque.

History

It is famous for its coasts and is popular for being mentioned in the old epic saga of Mahabharata. It is also known to be the place where Lord Krishna used to stay at times. There is an ancient Lord Krishna temple that dates back to the 10th century AD during the Harappa Civilization. The area is also attached with early civilization ruins with the temple being a fine example of it. It is a coastal city and is a part of the three claimants of Dwarka which was mentioned in Mahabharata. Its proximity with hills to the north and sea in the south has repeated mentions in the epic.
As per archaeological findings, the region is believed to have ancient settlements. There has been discovery of composite stone anchor and the artefacts which are found in and around the area dates back to as early as the 10th century AD and some even dating back to the Harappa settlements. There is a circular structure of about 4 meters in height that dates back to the 12th to 15th century AD which was constructed by using the same limestone blocks as of the temple.

Where is it located?

Kodinar falls very close to Una district on the highway. Una is just 37 kilometers away from it. The Gir Forest close to it makes it further connectable via buses to and from the city. The nearest station is at Veraval with long distance trains and local trains. Diu is the nearest airport with domestic flight facilities that leads to Kodinar.

Ideal Visiting Time

The Kodinar Shri Krishna temple can be visited anytime by religious devotees. The temple is considered very holy for its ancient old establishment and links of Lord Krishna.
