Laxmi Vilas Palace is another popular place of attraction in Gujarat. The palace was previously used as the official residence of the erstwhile Maharajas of Baroda. It is hailed to be the largest residential palace of the 19th century. The notable aspect of this palace is its rooms that reflect excellent work of arts and craftsmanship of the period. Apart from the palace, visitors can flock around other places as well.
The interior decoration of this palace is breathtaking and it reveals extreme attention to the details at the time of designing this palace building. The palace comes with many well known tourist spots. The most prominent among them is the museum of Fateh Singh which is mainly known for exhibiting the genuine paintings of Ravi Verma besides other objects. Then there is the building of Motibaugh Palace which serves to be a small portion of the actual palace. Then adjacent to the palace there is a big golf course that was established in the year of 1930 by Pratapsinhji.
Sayajirao Gaekwad III laid the foundation of this landmark place in the year of 1890. The development of this palace was started by famous English architect Charles Mant and was completed by another English architect named R.F. Chisolm. The overall design is based on Indo- Saracenic architectural style and most of the construction materials were imported from abroad. The palace occupies land area of about seven hundred acres and is still standing strong.
Apart from the architectural style of Indo- Saracenic, the interior decor reveals other architectural designs based on Marwar, Gujarati, Moghuls, Muslims and traditional Indian crafts. There are mammoth carving around the large windows and doors of this palace. Sculptures and statutes were sourced from different parts of the world to be kept in different portions inside this palace. Pillars of this landmark building were based on ornate designs. Darbar Hall is the most noteworthy piece of architecture in this palace. The floor of the hall is based Venetia mosaic style and its walls reveal the art work of mosaic ornate. The hall also contains pure multicolored marbles, stained Belgium glass work along with a designer balcony.

The palace is located in Vadodara and is major spot of tourist attraction in the region. From nearest railway station of Surat the journey is only about 144 km through NH 8. From Sardar Patel International Airport of Ahmedabad the journey is about 121 km from NE 1.
Ideal Visiting Time
Though it can be visited in any part of year but the most favorable time is during the period of October to February when weather is pleasant and cool.
