Jami Masjid is a revered mosque and has grabbed limelight due to its gigantic structure with two imposing minars on either portion of the central entrance which leads to the main hall of prayer offering. Northern section of this hall is mainly reserved for women and has been separated with perforated screen. This marvelous mosque comes with 3 entrance porches that lead to the courtyard. The eastern porch is strikingly remarkable for the exhibition of exclusive Jaali work and intricate carvings. Visitors will have the chance to come across an octagonal shaped tank outside this mosque. The architectural style of the mosque bears the influence of traditional Gujarati style. There are eleven domes in the main hall of prayer and the mosque itself comprises of pillars of around 200. This mosque is itself the bright example of architectural skills of India during the medieval times.
This landmark mosque was established in the year of 1513 and had been built by the erstwhile Muslim ruler Muhammad Begada. It is one of the popular places to visit in Champaner which also contributes to the rich historical pasts of Gujarat. Among the two minarets of this mosque, one had been damaged by Patankar who was a tyrant Scindia Governor in the year of 1812 with an intentional firing of the gun. It is important to mention in this context that with the fall of Hindu kingdom in Pavagadh hill region, Muhammad Begada re-constructed the town of Champaner based on Islamic concept and re-named it as Muhammadabad which did not last long after his death.
Where is it located?
This holy mosque is based in Champaner which is forty seven kilometer away from the town of Vadodara and one of the well known travel spots in the country. For reaching the mosque sites, tourists can easily hire taxis, buses from the town of Vadodara. The place is also accessible from nearby railway station of Surat and Rajkot as well.
Ideal Visiting Time
The climate of Champaner is always pleasant all-round the year which is neither too hot nor cold. But it is better to avoid summer seasons because that time the temperature will be too high. So it is better to visit during cold winter season to see the marvelous architecture of this historic mosque and to know about the interesting history of this town.
