Jama Masjid is one of the notable places to visit in Gujarat. This historic mosque is mainly known for its remarkable piece of architecture which attracts people from all over the world. This grand old mosque had been constructed with the use of materials like yellow sandstones and it reflects the perfect blend of Indo Islamic style of architecture. Since its inception, the mosque is still standing tall which only serves as a strong testimony to its solid foundational base. This mosque comprises of overall 15 domes and 260 pillars and is the major center of attraction in Ahmedabad.
The most integral portion of this mosque is its rectangular prayer hall that is being roofed with four vaults. The walkways of this holy mosque have been decorated with the Arabic calligraphy styles. The middle portion of this mosque consists of a revered tank which is full of holy water for the purification of the sins. In the eastern entrance of this mosque visitors shall come across to the tombs of Ahmed Shah and that of his descendants. Adjacent to it, there are the graveyards of the wives and queens of the sultans which are usually referred to as Rani Ka Hazira. Previously the mosque used to admit only the members of the royal family but later it was opened for the ordinary Muslim people.
The construction of this renowned mosque had been undertaken during the reign of Sultan Ahmad Shah who was the founder of Ahmedabad city. Accordingly, this largest and unique mosque of the India came into existence in the year around 1424 A.D under the supervision of ruler Ahmed Shah I. In the year of 1819, a violent earthquake had destroyed the topmost portion of its two main spires leaving aside the lower portions which are still in the fixed positions. During the 1957 earthquake two other pillars of this remarkable mosque had got destroyed.

This mosque is situated in the old city of Ahmedabad on the eastern most part of the renowned Teen Darwaza which lies opposite to the Mahatma Gandhi Road. The ideal period to visit Ahmedabad is from October to April when the climate is cool and comfortable. The mosque is always ready to embrace the pilgrims and during the time of Id and other Islamic occasions it is beautifully decorated.
