The Gir National Park, also known as Sansan-Gir, is a wildlife sanctuary in Gujarat. It is one of the renowned travel locations in Gujarat. Established in 1965, the park covers a total area of 1,412 sq. km. It is a completely protected area and said to be one of the most common travel destinations of India.
Kamleshwar Dam is situated within the forest Gir and of course it is a great place to visit. One may also stroll around the Junagarh Zoo which is another attraction around the forest. The place is famous for Gir lion and is said to be the best safari park in India. The Girna Mountain is an 1100m high mountain that has become one of the greatest travel spots in Gujarat. It has a jain temple on the hilltop. Uperkort Fort that was made during the time of Chandragupta Marya is also within the nearby attractions when visiting the Gir forest. It was kept abandoned till the place was found. Additionally, travellers should also spend some time near the Nalsarovar Lake which is beside Sansan Gir. It contains one of the three big tanks of the Gir forest.
History of the forest Gir
Gir forest used to be a grassland and scrubs park, bounded by rocky hills in the 20th century. The park was famous for the abundance of Fauna. It was said that in earlier days, Nawabs and Kings ensured to preserve the park and control the lion hunting in Gir. From that very time the park was preserved in royal way.
One can find many hotels and resorts around the forest. Also there are lodges, campsites and other forest department lodges which are considered as the best places to stay in comfort.
Where is it located?
Gir is about 65 kms from Junagarh and 43 kms from the Somnath Temple. The nearest railway station is Junagarh and Mumbai. Take a train to reach Junagarh and reach Gir by taxi or bus. One may even take a flight to Diu which is the nearest airport and is 92km away from the forest. Among the other prominent places Rajkot is another nearest town which is about 160km away.
Ideal Visiting Time
From December to March is the best time to visit the place.
