Situated not very far away from Bhavnagar- the fifth largest city of Gujarat-is the breathtaking Ghogha beach that offers spectacular views of the Arabian Sea. As this beach is not very developed from the viewpoint of commercial tourism, you won’t find too many tourists hanging around the place. The history of the beach complete with its surroundings can be traced back to 5th century AD when Ghogha used to be a bustling port. Then it was called Gundinagar port and the area flourished during the reigns of Vallabhi and Solanki dynasties. However, the port along with the trading centre that developed and prospered around the harbor began to wane in importance from 16th century onwards as Bhavnagar started to rise in significance as a commercial hub.
The beach gets its name from Gogobava-a highly venerated Rajput warrior. The Gujarati word for shell or conch-Goghala-maybe associated with the beach’s name. One will be able to spot numerous conches or shells lying on the beach.
Where is it Located?
The beach lies at a distance of approximately 20kms from the Bhavnagar town-the administrative headquarters of the Bhavnagar district. There is also a township by the name of Ghogha that is located almost on the midpoint of the western arm of the Gulf of Cambay (Khambat).
