Bhavka Shiv Temple

The Bhavka Shiv Temple is a beautifully created century old temple in Chandwada village. It is famous for the many types of wall carvings and etchings on its pillars. It is worshipped in homage to Lord Shiva and was built around the 10th century. The temple is spread over a sprawling area with a fort like exterior with solid stone materials that was used to make it. The Bhavka Shiv Temple is often compared to the Khajuraho Temple for its historic richness and beautiful carvings. There are many types of sculptures and designed figurines on the temple walls and giant pillars. The main dome of the temple is semi-broken but there are other ancient relics and parts of the temple that is still at display. The carvings are very well detailed with artistic interiors.

History

The Bhavka Shiv Temple is a fine example of prehistoric human art. The temple was once attacked by Sultan Mahmud from Ghazni and has been robbed and invaded many times by foreign attackers for the expensive artifacts and ornaments that was present in it. Stories also revolve around the actual construction of the Bhavka Shiv Temple. It is said that that the temple was built overnight by a temple dancer from that time. Erotic sculptures present on the temple walls to this day proves it to be very close to the legends. It is assumed to be created in the 746 to 480 BC. The temple is also surrounded by a water tank that adds for serenity towards its environment.

Where is it located?

It is located in the Bhavka area of Dahod in Gujarat. Dahod is famous for being the birth place of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in Dahod fort. It is located on the Dudhimati river banks.
