Bhavnagar is known to be the 5th largest city of Gujarat which was founded in the year of 1724. The city got its name from Bhavsinhji Gohil, the then ruler and founder of Bhavnagar. There are many places to visit in Bhavnagar, one of the popular ones include the Barton Library. It is considered to be the city’s oldest library and was established during the 19th century. The library comprises of central tower and two wings and also accommodates a museum.
The library started its journey with only five thousand books which were received as part of the donation from Chhagan Prasad Desai. During the time of Krishnakumar Sinhji there was an unprecedented rise of stock with about 15980 books. Some great facts:
1. Presently, the library comprises of books more than 60,000 books. Among them Gujarati books accounts for over 25,000, English books above 19,000, Sanskrit books of over 1000 and Hindi books of about 4,500.
2. It also comprises of rare manuscripts collections.
3. The library has eleven newspapers dailies in Hindi, Gujarati and English.
4. People issuing books from here accounts to 1450 which itself serves as a testimony to the popularity of this place.
The library is receiving support from Excel Crop and Municipal Corporation of Bhavnagar. Barton Library is having a history of about 144 years which has continued to attract visitors over the years. It has been promoted as a tourist destination Gujarat for people coming to the city of Bhavnagar.
Apart from the library, visitors can check out the museum that comprises of personal collections of Colonel Barton along with fossils and agricultural equipments. Gandhi Samriti is located on its 1st floor that was developed in the year of 1955.
The foundation of this library dates back to the year 1882 and has been receiving appreciation for its cultural and historic significance from both outside and local visitors. But the actual construction of the building was initiated in the year of 1860 during the reign of Jaswant Sinjhi. Previously, the library used to function on its own constructed building at Navapara but later it was given for the formation of Majiraj Girls High School. Mahatma Gandhi once served as the reader in this library. It was bestowed with Motilal Amin title in the year 1977 and 1999. Today, it stands among the well-known and features among the top libraries in India.

The library remains open from Tuesday to Sunday from 8:30 am to 11:30 am and is closed on Monday.
